3) Breathing Patterns Change
Changes in breathing are among the clearest signs hospice nurses monitor. Breaths may become shallow, slower, irregular, or interrupted by pauses. Some people develop periods of rapid breathing followed by longer rests. You may also hear a soft rattling sound as saliva or secretions gather in the throat, which can be more alarming to family than to the person. Nurses assess whether the breathing appears strained or peaceful and can suggest positioning or medications that ease discomfort. Near the end, breathing often becomes less predictable as the body gradually reduces its need for oxygen and energy.
