14) Periods of Withdrawal From the Room
Many hospice nurses notice a quiet turning inward as the end approaches. The person may seem less interested in their surroundings, stare past visitors, or focus on something only they can sense. Some become emotionally distant, while others seem deeply peaceful. This withdrawal is often part of the natural process and can happen even when the person still recognizes familiar people in brief moments. Nurses help families understand that this shift is not a rejection. Instead, it may reflect the person’s mind and body beginning to let go of the outer world and move toward rest.
