12) Less Response to Touch and Voice
A person who is nearing the end may begin to respond less to voices, greetings, or gentle touch. They may not open their eyes, turn their head, or react as strongly as before. Hospice nurses recognize that this does not always mean the person cannot hear anything at all. Many patients seem to retain some awareness, especially of familiar voices or comforting words. Nurses often encourage families to continue speaking calmly, identifying themselves, and sharing love. Even when responses fade, the human connection can still matter deeply in those final moments.
