Shar-Peis are calm with their own people but often highly territorial and cautious around outsiders. They can be particularly sensitive to physical discomfort and may react badly if handled roughly or placed in situations that feel invasive. Their strong guarding instincts mean they can go from quiet observation to defensive action quickly if they believe a boundary has been crossed. Socialization should start early and continue throughout life, because a poorly socialized Shar-Pei may become more rigid and suspicious over time. Respect for their space is essential for keeping them composed and cooperative.
